This past Friday our brokerage made time to support more of our local businesses. We explored the beauty of the Hamakua Coast by visiting the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens and in good fashion, we filled our bellies with a quick bite from the Onomea Country Market. If you have never been to either, I’ve put together a little information to provide some insight.

Nestled along the picturesque Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, the Onomea Country Market and the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden stand as vibrant oases of local culture and natural beauty. Let’s embark on a virtual journey to explore these two captivating attractions that offer a taste of Hawaiian hospitality and the wonders of tropical flora.

Discovering Local Treasures at Onomea Country Market

As you drive along the scenic Route 19, also known as the Hamakua Heritage Corridor, you’ll stumble upon the Onomea Country Market, a quaint roadside gem that beckons with its vibrant displays of local produce and artisanal crafts.

Location and Overview: Situated near the entrance to the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, the Onomea Country Market serves as a convenient stop for travelers seeking a taste of authentic Hawaiian culture. Here, you’ll find a delightful array of fresh fruits, vegetables, and handmade goods, all sourced from local farms and artisans.

Local Produce: From the sweet juiciness of ripe pineapples to the exotic flavors of lychee and dragon fruit, the market showcases the bounty of Hawaii’s fertile lands. Savor the flavors of the islands and take home a taste of paradise with a colorful assortment of tropical fruits and vegetables.

Artisanal Crafts: In addition to fresh produce, the market features a curated selection of handmade crafts and gifts crafted by local artisans. Admire the intricate designs of Hawaiian jewelry, pottery, textiles, and other unique treasures, each reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the islands.

Café and Refreshments: After exploring the market, unwind with a cup of freshly brewed Kona coffee or indulge in a tropical smoothie made with locally grown fruits. The market’s café offers a cozy spot to relax and recharge before continuing your journey along the coast. I personally enjoyed a refreshing ginger-ade and a kimchi reuben sandwich.

Immersing Yourself in Tropical Splendor at Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden

Just a stone’s throw away from the Onomea Country Market lies the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, a lush haven of natural beauty and botanical diversity overlooking Onomea Bay.

Location and Overview: Founded in 1978 by botanist Dan J. Lutkenhouse, the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden spans 17 acres of tropical rainforest, showcasing an impressive collection of plants from around the world. Its mission is to conserve, educate, and inspire visitors through the beauty of tropical flora.

Plant Collections: Step into a world of botanical wonders as you explore the garden’s diverse collections, each highlighting different species of tropical plants. From fragrant orchids to towering palms, the garden offers a sensory feast for nature enthusiasts and curious visitors alike. There are some rare species of plants in their collection that are worth searching for. Because there are different flowers blooming throughout the year, every visit will reveal something new.

Water Features: One of the garden’s most enchanting features is its series of cascading streams, waterfalls, and ponds. These tranquil water features not only enhance the beauty of the landscape but also provide habitats for a variety of aquatic plants and animals, adding to the garden’s ecological richness.

Educational Programs: Dive deeper into the world of tropical botany with guided tours, educational programs, and workshops offered at the garden. Learn about conservation efforts, plant propagation techniques, and the importance of preserving biodiversity in tropical ecosystems.
